Collected and cut oysters shells into three vertical fragments and sewed them with wax thread to create a barrier. Shell detritus is necessary for new oysters to grow. The piece at the Yale Anatomy Lab is a burial ritual, and represents symbolic passage into a next life. I wore the barrier publicly, and eventually brought it to the sea where the oysters came from as a reflection on mortality. When tides are low, a passage to a nearby island is revealed; otherwise it is swallowed, along with the piece – returning everything to the sea.
